IRL Style: A Fantastic Mother and Daughter Duo
Andrea Grady - Height: 5’3”What do you do IRL?
I teach French at an all girls Catholic academy. I’m married to the guy who took me to my senior prom, mother to three extraordinary kids, and the grandmother of the cutest five year old in the world. I love politics, fashion, the history of old New York, and all things French, including and especially the work of Paule Marrot.
Your URL?
http://illustratedobscurity.blogspot.com/
This is the blog of the artist/writer known simply as Veuve. I check in daily for the quietly cool Etsy finds, the nuanced musings on the seemingly ordinary, and the provocative gallery of works by an H3 artist with exquisite taste and consummate talent.
Why did you choose this look?
I chose the Josephine dress because of its graceful, classic silhouette. At school I have to dress professionally, but am allowed (some) creative license in my interpretation of that mandate. The simplicity of the dress is offset by the luxurious tone-on-tone pewter and steel silk. The look is timeless in the most modern way imaginable.
What she’s wearing:
- Josephine Dress, Dusk Kaleidoscope $268
- Lorca Turnlock, Taupe $335
- O Humidity! Steel Cuff, $160
- Sparc “Amonite” Necklace, $275
Marianna Grady aka Dolly - Height: 5’3”
What do you do IRL?
I am an art history and gender studies double major at Purchase College SUNY. During the school year, I am a manager at Purchase’s Student Center, lovingly called “The Stood”. During the summer I do freelance photography and volunteer at the Jelly/NYC Pool Parties. This will be my fourth summer selling water bottles, checking in VIPs, and managing the entrance of the beer garden. Come by and say hello!

Why did you choose this look?
The Takama dress is sophisticated, and I love the combination of the neutral linen and navy and white chevron print. Dresses allow me free range to move around, pockets are always a plus, and the bag added a nice punch to the look.
What she’s wearing:
- Takama Dress, Flax/Chevron $268
- Havana Large Hobo, Blueberry $498
Why did you choose this look?
I chose the Andromeda dress because I like the muted color and the
shape, fitted on top and flowing under the empire waist.
What she’s wearing:
- Andromeda Dress, Dusk $298
- Lorca Turnlock, Taupe $335
- Sparc “Aquamarine” Necklace, $160

IRL: Style in Real Life - Meet Vanessa Bley
Vanessa Bleyheight: 5'9"
what do you do IRL?
I make music. I also really enjoy cooking and driving, therefore drooling at parked cars and eating too much.

any upcoming NYC shows?
Monday, June 7 - 7PM @ Rockwood Music Hall - Stage 2 - 196 Allen St.
Monday, July 5 - 8PM @ Rockwood Music Hall - Stage 2 - 196 Allen St.
Thursday, July 29 - 8PM @ Cakeshop - 152 Ludlow Street.
Vanessa was such a great sport (and super excited about this vintage car parked outside the Brooklyn store!).
In the spirit of our first IRL of the summer, she decided to choose several looks to go from beach to brunch, to performance perfect.
Look 1
why did you choose this look?
Edgy but timeless as if Fellini made a movie starring the Clash. (the car helped).
what she's wearing:
- Carmen piped swim halter, black $88
- Carmen piped button swim brief, black $98
- Kaleidoscope scarf, $98
- Wyeth hobo (sold out), black $475
Look 2
why did you choose this look?
The silk, leather, bag, jewelry and cuff...oh my! I don't generally like prints, but there is something about this simple tank that changed that. So easy, but sophisticated. It really felt like I was able to marry my style with this collection and that I wouldn't tire of the look.
what she's wearing:
- Michi silk tank, kaleidoscope $98
- Biblio bag, black $558
- Emile indexer, yam $98
- Sparc claw necklace, silver $275
- Pade Vavra Indian Sunset ring, $160
- Oh, Humidity! steel cuff, $160
Look 3
why did you choose this look?
The Blake dress is beyond itself with that couture cut waist line. Wow. Not to mention the brilliant color and that zipper. Again, the sophistication.
what she's wearing:
- Blake dress, grenadine $198
- Boudoir silk scarf, black/cream $98
- Lava cuff, black/poppy $98
- HH clutch wallet, black onyx $170
And a special surprise! We showed Vanessa our Fall10 apparel collection at the Brooklyn studio. She totally flipped over everything and we totally flipped over her look, so we asked her to style a few IRL looks for Fall10 as a special style preview for our loyal mailing list.
Our Fall10 favorites?
Leather leggings, leather tunic dress, and a zippered leather mini styled with printed velvets inspired by a crime scene, pistol smoke print sheer chiffon, a lacy vest, and a wool peplum pencil skirt ala fellini's dolce vita? Check, check, check.

Drinking & Shopping? We're in! The Total Franklin Street Immersion happens this Saturday

*Copy borrowed from the most-venerable authoriti, Brooklyn Based
Been to Franklin Street lately (or ever)? We’ve planned the perfect day for you to explore one of Greenpoint’s coolest blocks. Head there on Saturday May 15, from 12-7 p.m., for complimentary Brooklyn Brewery beer and incredible deals at over a dozen shops and restaurants.
During The Total Franklin St. Immersion [TFSI] you’ll get to know the nabe AND support local Greenpoint shops and restaurants while under the influence of Brooklyn Brewery’s seasonal brews and special ales. To join in on the fun, RSVP here to get a special TFSI card that will entitle you to the deals and of course, the beer! The Diamond will be pouring half pints of Brooklyner Weisse; Black Rabbit will serve East India Pale Ale, and t.b.d. will serve Brooklyn Summer Ale (one complimentary glass per person at each).
Pick your TFSI card up between noon and 3 p.m. on May 15 at either The Diamond, 43 Franklin Street at Calyer, or at Champion Coffee, 1108 Manhattan Ave. near Clay. Then take the day to drink, eat, and shop.
Over a dozen shops and cafes on Franklin Street (listed below) will have serious discounts for those carrying TFSI cards–including 30% off at Hayden-Harnett, 20% off at WORD Bookstore, and menu specials at restaurants like Le Gamin, Anella, and Mrs. Kim’s (formerly The River Barrel until it recently changed its menu offerings to Korean comfort food).
During the crawl, you’ll get your TSFI card stamped after every purchase made and half pint downed. The first 100 to collect 6 stamps, and present them at t.b.d., will get a Brooklyn Brewery tote filled with gifts and coupons from Greenpoint stores including Fred Flare, Pip-Squeak Chapeau, In God We Trust, Alter, and more.
We’ll also select a random person who tweets about the crawl using the hashtag #TFSI to win a complimentary bottle of Brooklyn Brewery Sorachi Ace.
RSVP for our inaugural immersion, then tell your friends to come, too!>>
